Apple Nachos – Kid Snack Recipe

Don’t just make healthy snacks for your kids. Leverage this opportunity for them to build self confidence by you taking a back seat and letting them do the creating.

Family dinner table

It won’t be perfect…but who cares! If it’s edible, they’re more likely to eat something they make “okay” than something you make “great.” They’ll have more pride in their own creation. Fight the temptation to swoop in and rob them of that powerful opportunity.

A healthy snack recipe that kids can make on their own is called Apple Nachos. It requires no complicated cooking, is creative, and solid way to encourage kids to eat more fruit. Especially if you have kids that resort to the pantry full of “healthy” snack bars. This is a good way to bridge the gap from that highly processed stuff to something a bit more healthy.

Here’s how to make it:

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 apples
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter or almond butter (Mell makes our PB and almond butter)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (to taste…we’ve cut back a little here)
  • 1/4 cup granola
  • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Wash and slice the apples into whatever shapes you like. Thins, wedges, whatever.
  2. Arrange the apple slices on a plate.
  3. In a small bowl, mix together the peanut butter or almond butter and honey or maple syrup until well combined.
  4. Drizzle the peanut butter mixture over the apple slices.
  5. Sprinkle the granola, raisins, and chopped nuts (if using) over the top of the apples.
  6. Enjoy immediately.

Let your kids can get creative and personalize their Apple Nachos by adding their favorite toppings such as shredded coconut, chocolate chips, or sliced strawberries. We also make homemade yogurt every week. You can replace the PB or Almond butter with the yogurt. This snack is a great way to encourage kids to make healthy choices and have fun in the kitchen…

…but make sure you have plenty of napkins handy!
