Part One – 5 Dinner Time Conversation Starters

Dinner time is often a great opportunity for us to catch up and spend quality time together. However, it can be challenging to keep the conversation flowing, especially when kids are tired or distracted after a long day.

A good question can go a long way to a flowing conversation. You’ll have to mix it up sometimes. Ask them a favorite question on other days. We’ll keep providing you with questions to get the ball moving. They won’t all be homeruns at every dinner so pick and choose what fits for your family!

Here are five dinner time questions you can ask your kids to get them talking about their day:

  1. What was the best thing that happened to you today? Asking about the best part of their day can help your child focus on positive experiences and highlights the importance of looking for the good in every day.
  2. Did anything surprise you today? This question encourages your child to think critically about their experiences and helps them recognize and appreciate the unexpected moments in their day.
  3. What was something challenging you faced today, and how did you overcome it? By asking this question, you can help your child develop problem-solving skills and learn how to navigate difficult situations.
  4. What was something new that you learned today? This question encourages curiosity and helps your child develop a love for learning by recognizing the value of gaining new knowledge and experiences.
  5. Who did you play with or talk to today that made you happy? This question helps your child focus on positive social experiences and encourages them to develop healthy relationships with others.

By asking these dinner time questions, you can encourage your child to share their thoughts and feelings and strengthen the bond between you and your child.

Remember to listen actively, show interest in what they are saying, and provide positive feedback to encourage their communication.
